On Saturday, Feb 16th, the Club was honoured to be visited by Australian Olympic high jumper, and 2018 Commonwealth Games Gold Medallist, Brandon Starc.
Brandon’s achievements in 2018 included a Commonwealth Games Gold Medal, a win in the prestigious IAFF Diamond League, and equalling the 21-year old Australian high jump record of 2.36m. Brandon was a former member of Winston Hills Little Athletics Centre from the ages of 5 to 10 and a current member at Parramatta Athletics Club. NRCLAC is one of 99 Little Athletics Centres to receive a Coles Little Athletics Community Fund grant. To celebrate this, Brandon, in his role as a Coles Athletics ambassador, presented the equipment received through the grant to the athletes and families at NRCLAC, along with Coles Carlingford Store Manager, Adam Bardsley-Smith. NRCLAC received the grant to buy portable discus cages, discuses, and shot puts to support our multi-class athletes, thanks to funds raised by Coles from selected Community Bags. The equipment will support NRCLAC’s dedicated multi-class groups for athletes with special needs. The grants are important for many centres that need new equipment to continually provide a high quality and safe weekly experience. Funds for the grants are raised through the sale of specially-marked chiller bags designed by Aussie kids. For every bag sold, 25 cents is directed to the Coles Little Athletics Community Fund to provide sport equipment grants. Brandon spoke in to our athletes before the start of competition, and was interviewed by NRCLAC Club Captains Lauren and Dylan. Brandon then met our multi-class athletes, and some of our high jumpers, giving them some great ideas and technical coaching. NRCLAC would like to thank Brandon for visiting us, thank you to Coles for the Coles Little Athletics Community Fund grant, and thank you to Adam Bardsley-Smith from Coles Carlingford Court for his ongoing support, sponsoring our Presentation Day BBQ.
